Wire Harness vs. Cable Assembly: What Is the Difference?

  • wire harness vs cable assembly

The terms wire harness and cable assembly are sometimes used interchangeably, but they often describe different levels of construction and protection.

A wire harness typically organizes multiple individual wires or small cables into a defined routing system using ties, tape, sleeves, conduit or other protection. It is common inside vehicles, machines and electronic equipment.

A cable assembly more often refers to one or more cables terminated with connectors and may use an outer jacket, overmolding, shielding or stronger environmental protection. It is common for external or point-to-point connections.

There is no universal boundary between the terms. For manufacturing, the important information is the actual drawing, materials, connector requirements, protection and test specification rather than the label alone.
